The fresh, mountain air tickled my senses as Rebel and I headed up to Snow Bowl. He pulled off at Kachina Trailhead and we began to walk the path. It was beautiful out, sunny with a slight breeze. Rebel took my hand and I glanced down at our linked fingers. It was weird, but it didn’t feel real. I’d had a crush on him for years and now I was walking with him, holding hands.

“You all right?” Rebel asked.

“I’m just…I feel like I need to pinch myself or something. I never thought I’d be here with you.”

Rebel pulled me over to a tree stump and sat me down. He crouched down and lifted my face to his.

“I think part of me always saw you, I just didn’t want to. I never wanted to rely on anyone, because they leave you. My mom did, so did my dad. My grandmother got sick and now my grandfather…” Rebel sighed and looked away.

“Look, your grandmother didn’t leave you on purpose and your grandfather won’t either. What happened to your grandmother was beyond her control and you are working really hard to keep your grandfather in the here and now. Your parents sucked and they missed out on knowing a fantastic guy who, whether he likes it or not, is extremely caring.”

Rebel touched my cheek with his fingertip and smiled. “You are one hell of a fantastic guy yourself.”

“Yeah, well, I try.” I struck a pose.

Rebel leaned in and kissed me. I think I sighed.

“I love how you react to me; it’s like a drug,” he murmured against my lips.

“You’re different. The way you are, how you make me feel — your touch — it’s not something I’m used to.”

“Well, I’ll make sure you always feel the way you feel right now.” Rebel stood and offered me his hand. “Let’s keep walking.”

We walked a bit, not saying much and I realized we didn’t have to. We were comfortable together and didn’t feel as though we had to make conversation. We could just…be.

“You said your mom is in the South?”

Rebel’s voice startled me and I stopped walking. “I did?”

“You did.” Rebel eyed me. “Was that a secret?’

“Kind of. I mean, I moved her from New York when all that shit hit the fan.” Rebel arched a brow. “I want to tell you, I really do, but it’s safer if I don’t. The less you know the better.”

“I get it.” Rebel nodded, searching my eyes.

“So, um, you want to go get some food?”

“I have no idea where you put it all. I’ve never seen someone eat as much as you.”

“I’m a growing boy.” I grinned.

“Yeah, you are.” Rebel pulled me into his arms and kissed me.

My body liquefied as he ran a hand into my hair, tethering me to him. I couldn’t think. All the blood rushed from my head to my lower regions. Rebel’s mouth was addictive. I heard myself whimper, and then he pulled away suddenly, grinning at me.

“Oh, stop.” I playfully pushed him.

“I love the sounds you make, the way you hang onto me as if you’d melt.
